101 Ear Training Tips for the Modern Musician: ebook Review

Today I'd like to share with you some information about a wonderful new ear training ebook by Easy Ear Training founder Christopher Sutton, with Ethan Bennett and Victoria Williams: 101 Ear Training Tips for the Modern Musician.

As Christopher states in the introduction, this ebook was written to ensure that throughout the ear training process, students stay motivated, inspired, learn to integrate ear training with the rest of their musical lives, and devote themselves to becoming excellent musicians. All of these reasons are paramount to any aspect of music study, and 101 Ear Training Tips for the Modern Musician provides 13 topics and 101 separate tips for realizing those goals within the context of ear training.

Three of my favorite tips from 101 Ear Training Tips for the Modern Musician:

Tip 12, from "Practice"

Tip 48, from "Chords"

Tip 95, from "General"

Some of my favorite things about 101 Ear Training Tips for the Modern Musician:

Appearance. It is clean, clear, and very easy to navigate. The colors complement the information but do not overpower it. The artwork and colors are attractive, and the appearance is appropriate for the subject and for students of any age.

Layout. Offering one tip per page makes it extremely easy to incorporate each tip into piano lessons. The single page could be printed and used as a poster in the studio or as inspiration for the students during their home practice sessions.

Tips. The tips are so creative, and they are written in such a way that they are easy to understand and are fun and simple to implement. The tips can be used by students of any age and ability, and they can be followed as in-depth as the students wish to go! The tips are relevant (sing or play what you hear around you), affordable (most are or can be free), fun (play a game) and social (participate with a friend and share the tips on social media).

Topics. Music Appreciation, Practice, Active Listening, Audiation, Intervals, Chords, Relative Pitch, Scales & Modes, Rhythm, Improvisation, Playing By Ear, Singing, General - The variety of topics speaks to a variety of learning styles and personalities. Topics could be incorporated into group lessons, student workshops, music camps, private lessons, special assignments... This ebook contains something for everyone!

Sharing. Each page contains a "Share this tip" link so that each individual tip can be shared with your followers on your favorite social media sites.

Variety. The huge variety of topics and tips can help students stay interested and inspired to continue their ear training journey for a long time. Including so many topics lends itself to creating and shaping well-rounded students from an ear training perspective, which can be invaluable to students' overall musical development.
